Wortel adalah salah satu spesies tumbuhan dari famili Apiaceae (suku adas-adasan) yang memiliki siklus hidup dua musim (biennial). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim sedang dan merupakan hasil kultivasi dari Türkiye. Nama ilmiah Daucus carota subsp. sativus pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis Georg Franz Hoffmann pada tahun 1834.
